Pada motor bakar empat tak, katup dibuka ( atau nok berputar satu kali), harus disinkronkan dengan dua kali putaran poros engkol.
Sistem katup ini hanya ada pada motor bensin 4 tak dan motor diesel 4 tak.
Dengan menggunakan sistem katup ini akan sangat memungkinkan proses pembakaran ada ruang silinder akan dapat lebih efisien, karena pada sisitem katup ini dapat di stel manual dengan cara menyesuaikan putaran poros engkol dengan membuka dan menutupnya katup, yang memang proses membuka dan menutupnya katup digerakkan oleh putaran poros engkol.
